The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has asked the Election Commission to bar the telecast of a sting operation, which alleges that the Babri Masjid was demolished as a part of a carefully-orchestrated plan of the Sangh Parivar and Shiv Sena. The Congress has, however, claimed this vindicates their political position.
Speaking to HT, BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, said, "This will disrupt the peaceful election environment in the country. We have asked the EC to take immediate action and stop its broadcast and dissemination in any form as it will disrupt communal harmony."
Naqvi said that the 'timing' of the video was suspicious. "Sonia Gandhi meets Jama Masjid's Bukhari; he supports her the next day; and then we have a Congress-sponsored sting. Congress is adding communalism to its sin of corruption."
Congress general secretary Digvijaya Singh said the sting operation has exposed the BJP's involvement in the Babri Masjid demolition. "It was a planned conspiracy. Senior BJP leaders LK Advani and Uma Bharati knew about it," he said. "BJP is a party full of liars and Modi is the biggest liar of all."
The sting, conducted by Cobrapost, an investigative website, has recorded testimonies of 23 individuals who, it alleges, were responsible for the 'conspiracy behind the fall of Babri Masjid'. These include prominent BJP leaders like Uma Bharti, Vinay Katiyar, and Kalyan Singh.
BJP complains to Election Commission
The undercover operation claims that this 'conspiracy' was hatched the 'top level'; that the Bajrang Dal conducted a 'month-long military style training' for 38 workers in June 1992 in Gujarat, and later in Ayodhya; 'chisels, heavy-duty hammers, pickaxes, spades and grappling hooks and sturdy ropes' were supplied to RSS workers; and Shiv Sena too, separately, conducted a secret training in Madhya Pradesh and had a 'Plan B' to 'dynamite the mosque'.
It claims that the then chief minister Kalyan Singh knew what was about to happen on December 6, but 'chose to look the other way round', and was told by BJP leaders not to resign till the mosque was demolished. Leaders of the movement, according to Cobrapost, have also 'acknowledged the supoortive role' of then PM P V Narasimha Rao.
