It was on May 30, 2011, that Delhi University (DU) had launched its Facebook fan page. The page, which is not even 2 months old, has now more than 1 Lakh ‘Likes’ to it. At the time of going to print, the page had 101,570 Likes. “The numbers speak volumes about the success of the page. Since Facebook has accounts not only of present students but also the alumni of DU, the page has interested them all,” says Ajay Gupta, Director DU Computer Center.
The page has not only helped in resolving queries of various students but has often been used by students in venting their frustration on issues such as high cut-offs. “du treats south campus like its the step child....n north is its own child...:(,” writes Aashia Warjri on the page.
However, students have often complained about lack of replies to their queries on the page. “yaar, koi yaha pe administrative ya jo fb pe ye page chlta h, wo questions ka answr qu ni deta? (Why doesn’t the person running this page answer our queries?),” writes Devashish Goswami.
“We don’t moderate the content. We only provide with the links. There are a group of students, appointed by the Dean of Students Welfare, who are involved in giving replies. Students also raise the topics, which are answered by other members of the page,” says Gupta.
The other DU facebook pages
There are around 10 unofficial fan pages of Delhi University on Facebook. Most of these fan pages are being administered by alumni or the present students of DU. While one has 92 Likes to it, another has 47 and 32 Likes.
