Two American box office phenomena for 2010 appeared to end their spectacular runs this weekend.
James Cameron’s Avatar was toppled from the number one spot and Raj Kumar Hirani’s 3 Idiots could well end its theatrical run in the United States within the next couple of weeks.
3 Idiots has grossed about $6.5 million in the US, just about a 100th of Avatar’s takes.
Shariq Hamid, owner of four theaters screening Bollywood movies in Texas, was among those amazed by 3 Idiots’ performance: “Nobody expected that it would do so much business. People were thinking about $3 to $4 million.”
In an email, Jawahar Sharma, COO, International Distribution for Reliance Big Pictures, which released the film, said, “The film’s pedigree, star cast and the effort to take this film to every significant city in North America with a record 200-plus screens made the film accessible to more people and provided the ‘pull’ factor.”
3 Idiots will gradually give way to the next big release — the Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol starrer My Name is Khan.
