When it’s the birthday of one of Indian cinema’s biggest filmmakers, it’s natural for the King of Bollywood to step in and pay tribute.
Superstar Shah Rukh Khan made Yash Chopra’s 80th birthday memorable by taking everyone through the director’s journey over six decades, from coming to the city to become an engineer, to getting Rekha and Jaya Bachchan in one frame, and finally making another Yash Chopra romance this year. At the end, Chopra the legend announced that it was time he bid goodbye to direction.
The evening opened with Shah Rukh Khan reciting verses of poetry from Kabhi Kabhie and Jab Tak Hain Jaan. As Yash Chopra walked on to the stage, SRK introduced him as the man who completed 60 years in Indian cinema and as the person who is 22 films old and 80 years young!

Yash Chopra’s first choices were actually Parveen Babi and Smita Patil. He said, “I wanted Parveen Babi for Rekha’s role and Smita Patil for Jaya's role. But when I met Amitabh and told him about the cast, he asked me if I was sure.”
Yash Chopra said that it was only now that his wife had begun to complain and it was time to make her happy. Jab Tak Hain Jaan, he said, is the perfect film with which to bid goodbye to direction.
