It's strange but true, that an Englishman who forgot a speeding fine for 52 years, has paid up after rediscovering the ticket in an old coat pocket.
John Gedge, a resident of Sussex who is 84-year-old, was caught doing 55mph in a 35mph zone during a holiday to Philadelphia, in the United States in July 1954.
Though Gedge had a clear intention of paying the bill after he returned to his hotel that day, it slipped from his mind and he could not pay the fine in time.
But, he has proved to be a true gentleman for he has not only sent a note of apology with a five pound note to Philadelphia cops, but also personally called them to apologise for the delay.
"I told them that Englishmen always pay their debts and my conscience is now clear," The Mirror quoted him, as saying.
He has definitely set a unique example, and has left cops in Philadelphia admiring his honesty.
"I'm going to frame the letter and the five pound note as an example to everyone that honesty is the best policy, even if it is a little late," US police officer Mark Focht said.
