Highlight Story

Actor Vidya Balan, the brand ambassador for Earth Hour 2011, tells Hindustan Times about how she plans to conserve energy this year:

What made you support this cause?
We often come across scary statistics about climate change and global warming which are beyond our understanding. This initiative gives us an opportunity to contribute our bit for the environment. Also, often we feel that this summer is hotter than the previous one or Mumbai had an extended monsoon last year. This is small effort to ensure that the planet stays safe.

How do you plan to save
energy?
I will ensure lights and ceiling fans at home and studios are switched off when not required. I will turn off the power supply for gadgets such as a geyser and music system when they are not being used. If my father and I travel in the same direction, we will use one car to reduce our carbon footprint. I believe in gifting saplings to people on birthdays or special occasions because though I love flowers they fade away while plants increase green cover.

Has growing up in Chembur, one of the city’s greenest suburbs, made you an eco-sensitive person?
Not really. I took nature lessons in school such as planting trees, caring for nature seriously. Also, my mother is fond of gardening and we have several plants at home. She keeps a bowl of water on the terrace for birds.
