Vikram Bawa was one of the earliest promoters of 3D photography in India and has been on the Best Asian Photographer’s list. The shutterbug’s works are currently on display at Brighton, UK at the Indian Photography Today show. Besides shooting some of the top names in the entertainment industry - capturing frames for automobiles, fashion and advertising also interest Vikram. “Stunning, natural, sexy and awesome,” is how the ace photographer describes his celebrity subjects.
From revealing Sonam Kapoor’s innocence and charisma, to giving a sneak peak into Amitabh Bachchan’s unguarded moments, capturing Akshay Kumar’s flexibility, portraying Lara Dutta’s raw energy and Shilpa Shetty’s stunning moves — Vikram shares the stories behind his favourite frames.
‘Lara has raw sex appeal’
I have found Lara Dutta stunning since her modelling days. After her entry into Bollywood, she has become more graceful. She has a raw sex appeal that hasn’t been explored yet, in her movies or her pictures. This shot was taken for a magazine and we wanted to do something sexy yet classy. We created a bling and glam set, which looked futuristic at the same time. We wanted to do something over-the-top for this picture.
‘He makes any picture special’
Mr Bachchan makes any picture special. This is one of the pictures taken for the cover of a magazine. It was shot at his office after the success of Paa. His acting has taken movies to another level. We wanted to show him in his personal space without the fuss that normally surrounds him. So we shot him reading a book, giving it a natural human touch. We were attempting to get a simple picture representing the real Mr Bachchan.
‘You can’t go wrong with Shilpa’
Shilpa is a stunning woman and you can’t go wrong with her. This picture was shot in Lonavala and she did six changes in 30 minutes. This was one of my fastest shoots with her. Shilpa is very giving, approachable and always ready to experiment.
‘His eyes are emotive’
Akki is my favourite actor to shoot with because he is very particular, fast and professional. Akshay is toned and agile and flexibility comes to easily to him. He has a good mix of sex appeal with certain seriousness about him. He is focused when he does a shoot. He changes his expressions fast and you get many variations easily. He is very receptive while understanding the look you want and his eyes are emotive in front of the camera. One can throw the spotlight on him from any angle and he will still look stunning. We took this shot early morning for one of his movie campaigns.
‘Sonam’s innocence make for a great snapshot’
Sonam can carry off anything and is rightly called a fashion icon. There is a lovely energy about her. Her innocence and charisma make for a good picture. She doesn't need to try to put on a confident look. It comes naturally to her. This picture was shot as a concept where we wanted to capture the same person in two roles -female photographer and radio jockey. As a photographer, Sonam gave an innocent yet reserved smile, and as a radio jockey she went all out.
