Actors need to be tested: Big B

Highlight Story

We managed to get Amitabh Bachchan angry. The mood of the interview goes well with the character he plays in Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. HT City in a free for all with the Big B:

Everybody says Amitabh Bachchan is taking a risk by playing Gabbar Singh (Babban)? Your take?
Life is a risk every day. If Gabbar Singh is a risk, so be it. For me it is a terrific exercise as an actor, a challenge for whatever creativity I possess. Actors need to be tested. When I am in the mould of a character actor, playing Gabbar is another challenge. Also, I do not have much of a career in any case, so let me enjoy what I am doing.

Most associated with the original Sholay are not happy with Ram Gopal Varma’s initiative. You are an exception. Do you really think Sholay can be remade?
<b1>To each his own. Creative license and liberty are the basics of our democratic existence. RGV has his own interpretation and take on Sholay, he should be given that liberty. Sarkaar was his take on The Godfather, he did not belie it. Let the film release and let us leave the decision to the audience. They may reject it, they may like it. Who can tell today.

Your critics (wonder who they are) say that it was you who asked Varma to go ahead with the project because you wanted to play Gabbar in the original?

No I did not. (Incidentally, if you are wondering who my critics are, how come you know what they are saying?)

Did you have to watch Amjad Khan’s performance over and over again to ensure that you come up with a hatke performance?
No.

Any fond memory of shooting the original Sholay?
Yes. Plenty. But I would need an entire book for that and a great deal of time.

If you were to appear in another remake of yours, which film would that be and why?
I do not look at myself in the light of a hypothetical question. I would rather wait for someone to put up a proposal to me and then respond.

<b2>There have been reports that leading heroes in Bollywood have decided not to work with Aishwarya Rai.
I have not seen or heard of any such reports. She is my daughter now and lives in the same house as me and every day I see producers coming to her with proposals. They are not there to discuss the weather, surely.

There is talk that Vinod Khanna and you are coming together. Any confirmation?
I have not been given any such proposal to date.

Your alleged enmity with Shah Rukh Khan hogged the limelight. Now the buzz is you two are friends again. Your take?
The media decided to make enemies of us and has now decided to make friends of us. Who can argue with the media? You are all pervading.

Isn’t Amitabh Bachchan becoming too accessible?
If I am, then why are you taking the trouble of sending me this questionnaire? Are you willing to commit now, that this will be the last time you will ask me for an interview?
