"I have missed playing for Team India and have been working hard to get my place back,” asserts Harbhajan Singh, admitting that being dropped from the West Indies and Australia series last year was disappointing. “Sometimes you are in form, sometimes not. Right now, I’m more fit than ever and I’m waiting to get back into the squad.”
Ask him if he has any plans to diversify into any other field and he surprises us with his response, “I’ve always wanted to launch my own fashion brand. Maybe I will branch out completely and fulfil my dream.”
The right-arm off-break spinner, who is currently leading Mumbai Indians (MI) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL), has also been romantically linked with actor Geeta Basra, who he calls a “special friend”. Does he intend to make the relationship official this year? “No comments,” he retorts, before shrugging off any rumours of him getting into the movies. “I don’t think you’ll see me in films. Cricket is my life and career and I want to focus on just that!”
The Padma Shri, who’s the second highest wicket-taker in Tests after Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Murlitharan, however admits that he enjoys watching movies. “I love old Hindi films. Recently, I watched Vicky Donor and it was hilarious,” he smiles.
The cricketer, who’s one of the Reebok CrossFit brand ambassadors, also feels opening a cricket academy like Virender Sehwag is a great idea: “Maybe one day I will. There’s nothing better than encouraging young athletes to take up the sport.”
When IPL Season 5 began, according to one of the first polls, Chennai Super Kings were the clear favourites, followed by MI. How would he rate MI’s chances as the tournament inches towards the finals? The cricketer with a man-of-the-match effort lead MI to win the 2011 Champions League title says, “We all wish to lift the trophy and my big goal right now is to win the IPL Season 5 title.”
