After allegedly donating the entire fee he received for his work in Slumdog Millionaire (2009) to the Plan India NGO, actor Anil Kapoor is now devoting his time to an international cause against sex slavery and human trafficking. As part of the Freedom Project, Anil is going to be part of a documentary on the topic along with other international celebrities also endorsing the effort, which include Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher, singers Rickey Martin and Peter Gabriel among others.
“I am very inspired and excited to be part of this initiative. I have been part of this war against human trafficking for about two years with Plan India anyway, but as part of this Project led by CNN, we are making a documentary of sorts,” says Anil, adding, “The one-hour long film will talk about how sex slavery is as serious a menace as terrorism or drugs; and unlike the others, human trafficking doesn’t have a face that can be put in jail or taken action against. It is a mentality that needs to change.”
As the cause’s brand ambassador for the Asia-Pacific region, Anil went to a village located two hours away from New Delhi, called Bharatpur, on Wednesday. “Young girls at the age of 12 and 13 start working as sex workers in this place, while the boys remain at home. Parents willingly send their girls into the business, so they can send money back home to them,” says Anil, who has already shot a few promos for the campaign that is being carried out around the world in various stages. “Slavery was abolished more than 200 years ago, so why must it thrive in this form today? Human trafficking is worse than that,” he adds.
