They have mushroomed in the cyber space, trying to grab a slice of the Rs 150 crore market. The latest to join the online matrimonial services bandwagon is the one for those who are plus size.
Spurred by the success of online matrimonial services, many match-making websites are now foraying into the segment by introducing special services for special people ranging from physical to financial preferences.
With established matrimonial portals like shaadi.com, jeevansathi.com, vivahabandhan.com already carving a niche for themselves, there is a surge in sites offering new services based on weight, caste, religion, widowers and second marriages.
"The increase in the types of matrimonial sites is a healthy trend. We have almost 1000 members on our portal and every month on an average 40 to 50 people register," says Aditi Gupta, founder of www.overweightshaadi.com, a portal for plus sized individuals.
"I could never have met Abhishek if I hadn't registered on this site. Our needs were identical, it was a straight match," says Gaurika, a 27-year-old who had registered to Overweightshaadi.com.
"Traditionally, searching for life partners was the job of friends and family and then expanded to print classifieds. This led to wastage of time and offered limited choices," says Vivek Khare, Business Head, Jeevansathi.com.
