After the Rann
debacle, Riteish Deshmukh has gone back to comedies and the actor reasons that the audience likes him best in the genre.
Riteish had moved away from comedy with his last two releases Rann
, but with the movies failing at the box office, he is now going back to the tried and tested style in his forthcoming releases Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai
But the 31-year-old actor who became a fan favourite after playing a crook impersonating a woman in the hit Apna Sapna Money Money
, said that he is comfortable in all genres but the audience seem to like him best in the garb of a comedian.
"I guess it is not about me being in a comfort zone or anything. It's the other way round where it is instead audience which gets into a comfort zone while seeing me doing a comedy. In any case, both Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai
are different from each other because while the former is a romantic film, Housefull
is an out and out comedy," Riteish told PTI.
The actor made a niche for himself, playing the happy-go-lucky guy in comedies like Heyy Babyy
, Masti, Apna Sapna Money Money
and Kya Kool Hain Hum
, but his ttempt to move away from the stereotype was not as uccessful.
But Riteish, says that the audience remembers him in these films because they did well at the box-office while his performances in serious films were forgotten because the movies tanked.
"You are talking about films that worked and not whether Riteish worked or not. Audience remembers these films because they were successful at the box office. Having said that, it wasn't like I was doing too bad in the films which belonged to non-comedy genres. Maybe if a Rann
or an Aladin
would have worked, it would have been a different thing altogether," said the actor.
Riteish had pinned his hopes on the Amitabh Bachchan starrer Rann
, but the film directed by Ram Gopal Varma sank without a trace at the box-office, despite getting good critical reviews.
not doing well is ironical because whoever saw the movie liked it. The trouble though was that not many bothered to check it out at theaters. Till date people send me messages on Twitter that they happened to check out the movie on DVD and they loved it. My question to them is that 'Why didn't you see it in theaters?," said the actor who is of the opinion that a faulty marketing strategy was the culprit.
"I truly believe that it was the marketing aspect where Rann
could have done a lot better. Probably we were unable to create that kind of urgency amongst people that would have enticed them enough to go and see the film in theaters," said Riteish.
The actor is now going all out for the promotion of Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai
, and is touring the length and breadth of India.
"This is something that one should learn well and learn really fast. Making a film is all fine but what also matters is how does one actually promote it. Some films are star driven, so an Akshay or a Shah Rukh could pull audience all by themself. On the other hand there are others where you have to get people in theaters just out of sheer merits of the product in hand," said Riteish.
Well, one would look forward to both merits (Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai) and star power (Housefull) doing the talking as the two films release on 9th April and 30th April respectively.
