Filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj and Imtiaz Ali got a rare chance, on Saturday, to relive their college hostel days in Delhi. The two, ex-students of Delhi University’s Hindu College, attended the college’s first ever ‘hosteller’s alumni meet’ and spent the night singing, dancing and recalling the good ’ol days.
“Vishal introduced me to alcohol in the hostel,” quipped Ali, pointing towards his ‘senior’. “And after that he never stopped drinking,” laughed Bhardwaj and added that his hostel room was like an open house where any of his friends — juniors too— were welcome to stay.
“I never used to lock my hostel room and won’t do it even tonight,” he said. Ali, dressed casually just the way he used to in college back in 1993, was overjoyed to meet his ex-classmates. “Today it seems like nothing has changed and I’ve gone back in time,” he said. Bhardwaj said he was “thrilled” to meet Jai Singh, the old man who ran a tea stall in the hostel back in 1986 and who gave him endless cups of tea “on loan”. “I still owe him that money. It’s too sad that his stall has been removed now,” he said.
