Sanjay Leela Bhansali's opera ballet

Padmavati

opens on Friday at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris.

Padmavati

deals with the the days of Rajput glory. It has been written by Albert Rousel. The costumes have been designed by Rajesh Pratap Singh whom we spoke to in Paris.

"I will not be present at the Fashion Week in Delhi this time because of this project. Designing for an opera has been a dream come true for me," he stated.

French touch

Padmavati

, based on the story of Rani Padmini of Chittorgarh, has an entirely French cast. Sylvie Brunet, a reputed soprano, plays the title role. Finnur Bjarnason is Ratan Sen and Alain Fondary, Alauddin. The director and designer are not the only Indian names on this production.

Tanusree Shankar, wife of the late choreographer-dancer Anand Shankar, is the choreographer and the sets have been created by Omung Kumar Bhandula who has worked with Bhansali on

Saawariya

. There's a touch of exotica too real elephants and tigers will be used on-stage for the show.

Some facts

As in the case of Akbar's

Jodhaa

, there are some doubts about the existence of Rani Padmini (also known as Padmavati). However, she's famous for two things: her dark beauty and for committing

jauhar

(self-immolation).
