Bollywood’s bad side
Here are the controversies that plagued the film industry this yearentertainment Updated: Dec 24, 2012 01:33 IST
Shah Rukh Khan
The actor, who is the co-owner of the Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), was slapped with a five-year ban from entering the Wankhede Stadium for allegedly misbehaving with and bad mouthing the security officials at the stadium.
His hot headedness, however, didn’t start there. The actor created a stir when he allegedly slapped good friend Farah Khan’s husband, filmmaker Shirish Kunder, at actor Sanjay Dutt’s bash.
A controversy arose when late singing legend Mohd Rafi’s son Shahid slammed singer Lata Mangeshkar’s claims that she stopped singing duets with Rafi on an issue related to royalty rights for singers. Lata had also said in the interview that their reconciliation happened only after Rafi gave a written apology to Mangeshkar. Shahid, however, refuted, saying, “If that is the case, let her show the letter. My father passed away about 25 years ago, and now she is talking about this letter?” He also said that Rafi was the one who discontinued singing duets with Mangeshkar.
Saif Ali Khan
Actor Saif Ali Khan surprised fans, as he got into a legal hassle thanks to a brawl with an NRI. The actor was dining in a Mumbai restaurant with then girlfriend Kareena Kapoor and friends Amrita Arora and her husband Shakeel when the NRI seated at the next table complained that the celebrity group was too loud. An argument, however, ensued between Shakeel and the NRI. Saif intervened, only to punch the man in the face and break his nose. He surrendered to the police next day, which in fact helped him get publicity for his film — Agent Vinod.
The Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer Barfi!, which revolved around the love story of a deaf-mute boy and an autistic girl, was thoroughly appreciated by fans here before it drew immense flak for having as many as 22 long sequences lifted frame by frame from some Hollywood flicks and other international films. To top it all, the movie was announced as India’s official entry to the Oscars this year, thus starting a debate that it just might bring shame on the country. The film, however, is out of the Oscar race now, as it failed to qualify for the next voting round in the best foreign film category, according to the Academy.
Ajay Devgn VS YRF
Actor-producer Ajay Devgn filed a legal complaint against Yash Raj Films (YRF) claiming that they had arm twisted distributors and exhibitors in assigning more single screens for the latter’s Shah Rukh Khan starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan (JTHJ) vis-a-vis his film, Son of Sardaar, as both released on Diwali. While Devgn lost the case, he also ended up spoiling his wife Kajol’s relations both with YRF and SRK. A favourite with both, Kajol was not even invited for the premiere of JTHJ.
Ash’s weight gain
Her last films might not have done well, but former beauty queen-turned-actor-turned-Bachchan bahu, Aishwarya Rai started a worldwide debate over her post-pregnancy weight gain, thanks to delivering her first child with husband Abhishek. She was criticised for not shedding her baby fat fast enough and visiting the Cannes International Film Festival in her plus-size shape. But Bollywood stood by her and soon the criticism died. However, what came next were speculations surrounding the name of her daughter that the Bachchans took quite some time to announce.
Bollywood’s first superstar Rajesh Khanna’s alleged live-in partner Anita Advani sent a legal notice to Khanna’s family after his death to avoid being evicted from his bungalow, Aashirwad, with a claim of domestic violence. Anita had been in a live-in relationship with Khanna for eight years, and while news came out that his family, including daughters Twinkle and Rinkie, son-in-law Akshay Kumar and ex-wife Dimple were about to convert the bungalow into a museum, Advani claimed ownership of the house. Khanna’s family, however, called her claims to be fabricated, to which, Advani further revealed that Khanna sexually assaulted her while she was a teenager before having an affair with her.
Rani’s brother in casting couch
Actor Rani Mukerji’s brother, producer Raja Mukerji, was arrested in Mumbai after TV actor Priya Mishra pressed molestation charges on him. According to Priya, she had gone to meet the producer to narrate a script when he tried taking advantage of her. Priya, who is also an aspiring film director, reportedly wanted to cast Rani in her film, for which she had approached Raja. The producer allegedly asked for sexual favours from her. But Priya objected and left the scene immediately. Following the complaint, Raja was sent for a medical checkup and then taken into custody.
Rumour mills have been agog about actor Shah Rukh Khan and his Don co-star Priyanka Chopra having come a little too close for comfort during the shooting of the film’s sequel. What followed were reports of SRK’s wife Gauri ignoring PeeCee at many events. Adding fuel to the fire was SRK’s good friend Karan Johar, who took to Twitter to call the actor-turned-singer “spineless”, resulting in an ugly spat between the two before they let bygones be bygones.
