In movieland, There's always a shortage of heroines. And some ask for too much money, some are not exactly professional, and some even get lost to addictions. That’s a timeless and long, long story. Here’s looking at the top three dream women of show town. Either one of them could make it to the No. 1 position any Friday. Or they could also be Bollywood’s most-wanted triumvirate, according to our two-member jury Roshmila Bhattacharya and Vajir Singh.
Quote: “Number 1, 2, 10… hey, who’s counting? I prefer to be surprised by a hit,” says Katrina Kaif. But there’s no disputing that the 24-year-old is one of the three hottest actresses in town.
Back track: Boom almost spelt doom for the cutie from London but that was five years ago. Since then she hasn’t given a single flop. Sarkar, Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya, Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye, Namastey London, Apne, Partner, Welcome, Race, Singh is Kingg.. she’s B-town’s lucky girl today.
, both with Salman Khan. Next year there will be Rajkumar Santoshi’s
Ajab Prem Ki Gajab Kahani
with Ranbir Kapoor.. and a Kabeer Khan directed Yash Raj project with John Abraham, Prakash Jha’s
and a movie to be directed by David Dhawan.. and one more with Akshay Kumar. In addition, there’s a double deal with Studio 18.
“I’m only 24 and at the moment I don’t want the pressure of carrying a film on my shoulders.”
Her asking price is said to be Rs 2.5-3 crore per movie. On the record, her statement is,“You can ask for any amount but you get only what you deserve.”
She is currently promoting a hair removing cream (Veet), cosmetics (Lakme), chai (Alokozay Tea) and a camera (Kodak). She has replaced Aishwarya Rai in the Nakshatra campaign.
Ongoing Anglicised accent.. which limits her choice of roles. Salman Khan brought this Alice into Wonderland.. but he could take her away too. Of late, he’s been talking of marriage.. but not mega-seriously.
What the stars foretell:
Tarot reader Larra Shah believes she should listen to her instincts. Numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi feels if she spells her name as Katreena she’ll do better. “All her movies will work but her relationship with Salman Khan may turn sour,” he adds.
Astrologer Bejan Daruwala says that the problem with her is that she is very good but not great. “She’s also a Cancerian. But if she survives the competition, she will be tops,” he says.
“Stardom is huge and I’ve only managed to touch 10 per cent of it. And I’ve been lucky. There have been instances when someone has left a film and I’ve taken it on. And it’s turned into a hit. In my career of five years, I’ve given a hit or two every year,” says Priyanka. Today the former Miss World is a strong contender for the numero uno spot.
Since debuting in Hindi films with
The Love Story of a Spy
(her first screen appearance was in the Tamil film
) Priyanka has had six hits —
Mujhse Shaadi Karogi
Waqt — Race against Time
Don — The Chase Begins Again
She’s already had three releases this year —
Love Story 2050
God Tussi Great Ho
— but they’ve not raised her market equity. Three more are lined up, starting with the fantasy adventure
in which she plays Abhishek Bachchan’s bodyguard. This will be followed by Madhur Bhandarkar’s
and Karan Johar’s
. Next year there’s Vishal Bharadwaj’s
and Ashutosh Gowariker’s
What’s Your Rashi?
Modest in comparison to the other two heroines.. between Rs 1.5 - 2 crore.
: Is a clear favourite in advertising circles. Endorses two soaps (Lux and Ponds), a shampoo (Sunsilk), a scooty (Hero Honda Pleasure), comic book (Virgin Comics) and is the only woman to be the ambassador for a suiting brand (J Hampstead).
Choice of wrong films. Also after a blitzkrieg of rumours, she hasn’t worked again after her initial link-up with Akshay Kumar. Despite three huge hits, the duo haven’t worked together after
. Her liaison with Harman Baweja could also work against her since their on-screen love story was thumbed down.
What the stars foretell:
Larra Shah says that it will be a good year for Priyanka and hard work will bring in results. She adds, “But she must solicit advice next year before taking any major decisions.” Bhavikk Sangghvi says this was her seventh year but 2008 adds up to one which is not very beneficial.
“That’s why God Tussi Great Ho and Love Story 2050 bombed. She may benefit from Fashion though. She should be a little more decisive now. The next four-five months are not favourable for her. But the beginning of 2009 should be good.” Bejan Daruwala says she’s an outright winner, “A Cancerian, she will do excellently in her career and personal life.”
Quote:“For me it’s been a fantastic journey so far and a dream debut,” Deepika Padukone has maintained. Nine months after the release of Om Shanti Om, she’s in the frontline. And to think she almost became a badminton player.
Back track: Just two releases so far. Superhit OSO and semi-hit Bachna Ae Haseeno.
Coming up: A special appearance in Billoo Barber. And a double role in Chandni Chowk to China. She’s also said to have signed up for Sajid Nadiadwala’s Houseful.
Price factor: In the price bracket of Rs 2-2.50 crore bracket.
Add ons: She started out as a model and continues to pitch for the hair oil brand Parachute. There’s also a soap (Liril), a toothpaste (Close-up), denims (Levis Signature) and an airlines (Kingfisher).
Minus points: Can dance, can act, is lucky. Needs to be more proficient in her dialogue delivery (which actress doesn’t?). And what if beau Ranbir Kapoor becomes possessive?
What the stars foretell: Larra Shah asserts that Deepika will shine big time. Bhavikk Sangghvi agrees: “She’s in form.. although her name doesn’t add up to a good number. Chandni Chowk to China may do well and she’ll go from strength to strength. Her pairing with Ranbir Kapoor is not bad but not great either.” Bejan Daruwala asserts, “This year, November will be very important for her.”
