Boy meets girl. They fall in love. They want to marry. But parents have a problem.

While this theme has been remixed and recycled in Bollywood forever, Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor's 2 States trailer, manages to look fresh and engaging, thanks to the lead pair's palpable chemistry.

Ananya Swaminathan (Alia Bhatt) is a south Indian from a 'shuddh Brahmin' household, and Arjun Kapoor is a 'typical' Punjabi. They fall in love and decide to meet each other's parents. And the hell breaks loose.

When Arjun asks his mother (Amrita Singh) to talk to Alia's mother (Revathy), this is what she says - "Kis bhaasha mein baat karoon, mujhe madrasi nahi aati."

In another instance, Revathy calls Amrita 'typical Punjabi, uncultured people'.

The film is based on Chetan Bhagat's semi-autobiographical novel 2 States.

A campus hit?

The film has the potential to become a campus crowd puller. Arjun hits on Alia and says, "Ye jo tumhare right gal ke left side par jo til hai na uspe mera dil aa gaya hai." It might be the next pick-up line for teenagers.

The crackling chemistry
Arjun and Alia feature in a few intimate scenes, including a lip-lock sequence. Their off-screen chemistry has certainly helped them to deliver the scenes convincingly.

Performances
Alia and Arjun seem to be getting better with each film. At least the trailer suggests so. The casting is bang on; it's fun to see Amrita Singh and Revathy fight. Ronit Roy and Shiv Kumar Subramaniam don't get much screen space in trailer.

Warning: If you're a Punjabi, don't watch this movie with your south Indian neighbour and vice versa. We have a solid reason for this. Sample this conversation.

Amrita Singh: Aapko to yakeen hi nahi hua hoga... ki aapki beti ko ina qualified aur handsome ladka mila hai (you must have thanked your luck, that your daughter has got such a well-qualified and handsome groom)

Revathy: Actually 90% Tamillians well-qualified hote hain (Actually 90% Tamillians are well qualified)

Amrita Singh:
Lekin maaf karna, 90% Tamillians gore bhi to nahi hote (Pardon me, but 90% Tamillians are also not fair in colour)

Our verdict
Old wine in a new bottle, with an excellent packaging.
