Bollywood is one of the largest film industries in the world. But then, churning out 300-odd films a year is one thing, and ensuring that people throng to the theatres to watch them is quite another.

Item numbers and special appearances by big stars have already proven to be tried-and-tested formulas for a film’s success. However, their excessive use has also drawn flak from viewers and critics alike. It is no wonder then that filmmakers are adopting newer ways to get your attention. And the latest trick seems to be the trend of coming up with quirky titles for their movies.

If titles such as Mickey Virus, Disco Valley, Mango, Banana or Sooper Se Ooper are anything to go by, our filmmakers seem to be having a field day coming up with names.

Says producer Ramesh Taurani, whose next is called Phata Poster Nikhla Hero. “A title should do full justice to the film’s content. It can’t be abstract. But I agree that an unusual title gets the audiences’ attention. In fact, I strongly believe that the title plays a role in film’s initial box-office figures too.” Concurs Rahul Mittra, whose next production is titled Bullett Raja. “My title also goes well with the feel of the film and its content.”

Action Jackson
Stars:
Ajay Devgn, Sonkashi Sinha, Yami Gautam
Director: Prabhudheva
Believed to be a typical masala-action movie, it is apparently going to be shot in Mumbai, Dubai and Malaysia. The shoot began around 10 days ago. This film also marks the debut partnership between Ajay and Prabhudheva, who has worked with biggies Akshay Kumar and Salman Khan in the past.

Kuku Mathur Ki Jhand Ho Gayi
Stars:
Siddharth Gupta, Simran Kaur Mundi
Director: Aman Sachdeva
Directed by the National Award-winning ad filmmaker Aman Sachdeva, this film is a comedy set in Delhi.  The film also brings together the producer pair of Ekta Kapoor and Bejoy Nambiar (who last directed David
earlier this year).

Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania
Stars:
Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt
Director: Shashank Khaitan
Helmed by a newcomer, this quirkily titled film will see the pair of Varun and Alia returning to the big screen after last year’s hit, Student of The Year. This project will be produced by Karan Johar’s production house.

Sharmaji Ka Atom Bomb
Stars:
Anil Kapoor, Tabu
Director: Abhishek Sharma
Kapoor and Tabu have previously worked together in hit films like Virasat (1997) and Biwi No 1 (1999). But ever since, the National Award-winning actors have never been cast together. Now, over a decade later, they will return to the big screen in Abhishek’s comedy-drama.

Phata Poster Nikhla Hero

Shahid Kapoor, Ileana D’Cruz
Director: Rajkumar Santoshi
After the success of his last comedy, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahaani (2009), Santoshi is back with his next comic caper. The film will also feature Salman Khan in a special appearance.

Featuring the unusual pair of Farhan and Vidya, the film is a sequel to the 2006 hit, Pyaar Ke Side Effects. It will releases by the end of this year. Interestingly, Ekta Kapoor has joined hands with producer Pritish Nandy for this movie as it stars her favourite actress.

Humshakals
Stars:
Saif Ali Khan, Tammanaah, Bipasha Basu
Director: Sajid Khan
After this year’s debacle, Himmatwala, Sajid Khan now returns with a comedy. Also starring Riteish Deshmukh and Ram Kapoor, the film will see the male leads in triple avatars. Humshakals is slated to go on the floors in September and will be extensively shot abroad. It is likely to hit theatres on June 6, 2014.

Shuddh Desi Romance
Stars:
Sushant Singh Rajput, Parineeti Chopra, Vaani Kapoor

Believed to be a quirky take on the changing dynamics of love in a small town (Jaipur), this Maneesh Sharma (of Band Baaja Baaraat, 2010 fame) film will see Sushant teaming up with Parineeti and newcomer Vaani for the first time.
