Bollywood's biopic brigade

The success of biopics such as Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Paan Singh Tomar and The Dirty Picture in the last couple of years  has made Bollywood filmmakers sit up and take note. Now many of them are trying their best to show the real stories of the legends of India on the big screen. Boxer Mary Kom, ­politician Narendra Modi, late playback singer Kishore Kumar —the lives of many such legends are being ­recreated for the big screen.

Som Bahadur Pun
Actor Amit Sadh, who made his debut with Kai Po Che last year, will play the lead in The Champ, a biopic on Som Bahadur Pun, a Kargil war hero. Pun took to boxing when he was 10, went to war and won a silver medal in the Commonwealth Games (2002). “Pun’s career was cut short by injuries... but he made a comeback. That is what I found very inspiring,” film’s debut director Shubendu Bhattacharya was quoted as saying.

Charles Sobhraj
Actor Randeep Hooda will be seen in a new avatar in Amod Kant’s upcoming thriller, Main Aur Charles. He will step into the shoes of serial killer Charles Sobhraj. The film revolves around the infamous escape of Sobhraj from Tihar jail in 1986.  

Narendra Modi
Director Rupesh Paul is making a film titled NaMo, based on the life of Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi. “It is not a biopic, but an inspiration of Narendra Modi’s charisma,” Paul says. Actor Paresh Rawal is expected to play Modi in the film.

Sarabjit Singh
Filmmaker Subhash Ghai is making the film upcoming biopic on Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who spent 22 years in a Pakistan jail on spying charges and died in a Lahore prison last year after an attack by ­fellow inmates. The film, directed by Ishwar Singh, will reportedly see actor Sonakshi Sinha playing the role of Sarabjit’s sister. However, when contacted, Ghai said, “No actors have been finalised yet.”

Mhd. Azharuddin
Filmmaker Ekta Kapoor  recently bought the rights to make a film based on the life of Indian ­former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin. Kunal Deshmukh will  direct the biopic, which is currently being scripted.  

Emraan Hashmi is ­considering Azhar’s role. He is interested but since he is currently busy with his son’s health, he hasn’t given a nod yet,” a source says.

Kishore Kumar
The biopic planned on  legendary singer Kishore Kumar, seems to have been delayed. Ranbir Kapoor, who is ­playing Kumar, said, “Playing a real man’s life on camera is very challenging.” About the delay, he was quoted as saying, “We are working on the script and hopefully after we finish the shooting of Jagga Jasoos we will start working on it.”

Shivkar Talpade
Actor Ayushmann Khurrana will play the role of eminent Maharashtrian scientist Shivkar Talpade (who is believed to have constructed and flown India’s first unmanned airplane much before the Wright brothers) in the latter’s biopic. Called Bombay Fairytale, the film is helmed by debutant director Vibhu Puri. “I always wanted to do a biopic. I’m happy that I am doing a good mix of films at such an early stage of my career. Our ­scriptwriter, who is a Marathi, gives me tips to learn Marathi as it is really a difficult task for a Punjabi like me,” Ayushmann was quoted as saying

MC Mary Kom
This biopic on Olympic bronze medallist boxer, Mary Kom has been in news ever since it was announced. Actor Priyanka Chopra will be seen playing the character of five-time world boxing champion Kom, in the film, which is directed by debut director Omung Kumar and deals with the trials and tribulations of Mary, who was born to landless ­farmer in Manipur and ­subsequently rose to make a mark for herself as a boxer. “Her (Kom) story is same as that of mine. I, too, struggled when I came in the industry and cried alone. It is basically the story of every girl, who has a dream. I want to tell the story of real Mary,” Priyanka was quoted as saying.
