Legendary playback singer Manna Dey died at a Bangalore hospital early on Thursday after prolonged illness.

Dey, 94, who was admitted to Narayana Hrudayalaya five months ago for respiratory problems, died of cardiac arrest at 3:15am, a senior doctor at the hospital said.

His daughter Shumita Deb and his son-in-law Jnanranjan Deb were by his bedside when the end came, his family said.

Dey is survived by two daughters, one of whom is based in the US.

"We are saddened by his loss, but he died peacefully. His last rites will be performed later in the day," his son-in-law said. 

His fans across the country mourn the loss.

Amitabh Bachchan emotionally wrote on Twitter, "Manna Dey, stalwart of the music world, passes away. Flooded with memories and his songs. In particular his rendition of Madhushala." And later added, "Manna Dey RIP .. !! Prayers and condolences to loved ones and family ! Strange how we connect events of our life with his songs !"

Filmmaker Kunal Kohli tweeted, "#mannadey last of the greats,along with Kishore,Rafi & Mukesh,passes away.RIP.'ek chattur naar' to 'ae mere pyaare watan' what a range"

Filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt underlined the eternity of his voice and tweeted, "Manna Dey passes away. His voice shall linger forever.R.I.P."

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "In Manna Dey, we have lost a legendary singer. His immortal voice will remain with us forever. May his soul rest in peace."

Actor Manoj Bajpayee wrote, "MANNA DEY is no more!a great singer!lets pray for him!my condolences to his family!his music will live for 1000 yrs.RIP"

Shabana Azmi, "Manna Dey had a unique voice. He will live on through his songs Ai Meri Zohra Jabeen/ dil ka haal suney dilwala/ poocho na kaise maine RIP"

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar wrote on Twitter, "Mannada, a Legendary singer with a golden voice, that ruled our hearts for decades, will be missed by all. Zindagi kaisi hai paheli haye."

Singer-composer Shekhar Ravjiani tweeted, "The legend is no more...But he'll forever live in our hearts through his songs and his voice. RIP Sir Manna Dey"

Shankar Mahadevan pays ode in a musical way: "Zindagi ... Kaisi hai paheli haaye ..Kabhi toh hasaaye ... Kabhi ye rulaaye ..Mannada ... Bless us !!"
