The Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor-starrer, Gunday, which hit theatres on Valentine’s Day, did manage to woo audiences, according to trade analysts.
While mixed viewer reactions meant a dip in collections on Saturday, the film picked up pace on Sunday.
“The film did quite well on the first day as there was good hype. As the reports were mixed, there was a 25 per cent drop on Saturday. On Sunday the earnings improved, though not by a great margin,” says trade analyst Amod Mehra.
“It has done a healthy business of Rs. 42 crore business over the weekend, so it’s a safe film,” he adds. The budget of the film, with print and publicity, is approximately Rs. 40 cr, according to Mehra.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh is quite equivocal about the collection, but sounds hopeful. “There has been a decline in Monday’s collection slightly. Overall it’s a profitable venture,” says Adarsh. Mehra adds, “Monday onwards, the film is not maintaining that well. There has been a huge drop, but overall did decently.”
Apparently, the exhibitors have had considerable occupancy through the weekend and Monday was not too disappointing. Sanjay Dalia, president at Cinemax India, says, “The occupancy was around 65 to 70 per cent on average. There was a drop to 45 per cent (on Monday) which is normal.”
Before Gunday’s release in West Bengal, there was resistance from the Bengali film industry as they felt the dubbed version would affect local business. But, according to Box Office India magazine, it released in nearly 46 theatres. “It has done quite well. It’s the first film that released in both Hindi and Bengali,” says Arun Mehra, a local distributor. Mumbai-based trade analysts, however, are unaware of the collections of the Bengali version. “It was a tiny release in Bengal, so I’m not aware of how well it did,” says Taran Adarsh.
