The multi-talented Farhan Akhtar surprised many with his talent when he sang some numbers in Rock On!! (2008).

His band, Farhan Live, which has never played gigs in Mumbai before, is thrilled to be doing so for the closing ceremony of the Hindustan Times Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, 2014 (KGAF) tonight (February 9).

Farhan talks to us about playing to a live audience, dancing in movies and why he will never be a playback singer.

How exciting is it to perform before a live audience?
It’s a completely different experience from what I do in films. There is something magical and fulfilling about it. You don’t get this connect with the audience even when watching a film with them.

You have been dancing in your movies of late, so are stage shows on your agenda?
Never say never. But do I really want to dance at an awards show? No. Dancing for me has to be important to the film’s character. I love music in films; it’s one of the wonderful things about Indian movies, but there is a certain treatment of songs that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to dance. For the longest time we had that. I find it difficult to wrap my head around the idea of ‘cut to dance’. But whenever dancing is needed in a film, I will rehearse and get it right.

Tell us about your performance at the KGAF.
We will do a one hour set from Rock On!!, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011) and couple of songs from my earlier films. It should be a fun evening, probably nostalgic too.

What are your memories of the KGAF?
I have been there twice. The first time I went was to perform for Rock On!! with Shankar- Ehsaan-Loy (music directors) at the same venue where I will perform tonight. I sang two songs. The next year, I just walked around and took in the art installations put up over there. It’s lovely and wonderful that the city celebrates its artistic culture, so it’s nice to be part of it.

Do you think you would be a playback singer, perhaps voice for friends?
I don’t really think of this as an alternate career. For friends, it depends and if I feel happy about singing then maybe. I don’t think of myself as a playback singer. I sing in my films as it helps the characters I play.
