It’s a family that lives together, bowls together and wins together. The Delhi-based Sarda family has won the distinction of being the first in the country where all four members are professional bowlers. They now represent India worldwide in the bowling arena.
A businessman by profession, Harsh Vardhan Sarda, 56, began to bowl in 1974. It was his love for the game that inspired his family to take up the sport. “I took up bowling professionally in 1989, and won my first tournament in the same year. It was quite a boost for me. Ten years later, the whole family played together,” he says.
Accompanying her husband to tournaments was a boring task. So Anuradha Sarda, 49, a house wife, took up the sport with a little persuasion. “I had two options, to sit and watch Harsh play or to get up and bowl. I chose the latter,” she says.
For 26-year-old Sugandha, the first child of the family, bowling was never the first choice. An interior designer by profession, she played her first championship only last year and won her first medal recently. “I have learned bowling under the guidance of my dad and my brother,” says Sugandha.
The youngest member of the family, 22-year-old Dhruv is an animator by qualification. “Once I finished my schooling, dad allowed me to try out for the state team to play the nationals,” he says. “We had a gym to keep us fit. This requires you to bowl with a 15-pound bowling ball. We need to work on almost every part of our body to increase stamina,” he says.
“Travelling has been on the highest side that I can imagine. Representing India in over 10 countries, spanning three continents in two years is like a dream come true,” adds Dhruv.
