Coffee culture usually breeds conversation, camaraderie and of course, exceptional coffee beans. Alas! Not all cafes can live up to the bean cult. Java Green Café, Reliance’s little coffee store, which has opened up next to Candies at Bandra Reclamation, is a paler, poorer cousin of its neighbour.
The vast menu of sweet nothings suits facchas (first year college students). The drinks include smoothies, shakes, ice cream floats, ice-blended granites, hot and cold coffee and chocolate drinks. We ordered two frappes that tasted strong, very sweet and like a regular blend.
They were nothing exceptional, but not bad either - similar to railway station comfort coolers. But the coffee mix used, tasted more like a take away, than a fresh brew. The plus, though, was they were reasonably priced. For Rs 49, one got a large paper cup. At the likes of Barista and Café Coffee Day, the same Frappe would set you back by at least Rs. 60.
But their efforts to satiate a café goers’ desire did not really come up to the yuppie mark. Our chicken burger with a chicken patti in a sesame seed bun, tasted old and quite dry. On the other hand, its veggie cousin, a pineapple and corn croissant, wasn’t as bad. But the capsicum and onion accompaniment in the barely-there filling wasn’t an appetising choice.
The desserts were seriously lacking in imagination and variety too. Java Green played it safe and offered only the most conventional treats such as mini donuts. The best part of the café though was the fact that one could sit there for hours guitlessly and light up without interference. It was a true cafe in that sense.
