One thing that the newly introduced semester system in Delhi University has certainly changed, is the schedule of the college annual festivals, popularly known as fests. From rehearsal plans to other infrastructural arrangements, everything is uncertain, say students of different colleges of the varsity.

“There was a change that was all that we knew at the first instance. With strikes happening and exam dates not decided, there is a lot of uncertainty,” says Saatvika Kantamneni of the dramatics society of Sri Ram College of Commerce.

The fest fever used to infect the university campus around November end or early December, but now the students will get to see the most awaited performances in January or February as most colleges have scheduled their carnivals around that time. “The fests are now going to lie between two sets of exams for us. We will have to go down to practicing soon after our exams in December and then again gear up for the second round of exams,” adds Kantamneni.

For some the change in the dates is also about experimenting. “It would be like starting the rehearsals from the scratch after a break,” says Prakriti Sharma, a member of the Lady Shri Ram College for Women’s dramatics society.
Apart from timely planned events, the fest time is also about making last minute changes and improvising their competitive pieces. “Earlier we used to have the entire December to polish our pieces, but this time we would be busy in our exams at that time,” says Shubham Bhatia of Ramjas College.

The rigorous rehearsal sessions and the hustle bustle that used to prevail in the campus every year is missing. “All one can see is confused people with bundles of notes in hand,” says a student of Bhaskaracharya college of Applied Sciences.

But Veronica Xavier, a member of the western music society of Indraprastha College for Women has a different take on it. “It’s not really a problem, at least for the music societies I guess. We start preparing the song as soon
as the session begins, so the change would not affect our schedules as such,” she says.
