As other leading ladies praise and mend fences with Kareena Kapoor, we wonder if it’s sisterly love or a PR overdrive
The world of Bollywood as we know it may no longer be the same place. For, if reports are to be believed, our top actors are out waving white flags in what seems to be the season to kiss and make up.
The one person who seems to have been in the midst of things more than anyone else is Kareena Kapoor. But now, as the other leading ladies go around ostensibly praising her and making friendly overtures, we wonder if the catfights we all loved reading about are truly over.
Senior media expert Rauf Ahmed feels the cycle of jealousy, bickering and subsequent patch ups between heroines is because of the “PR overdrive”. He says, “They understand the need to do these things. Sometimes they misspeak, feign ignorance and then say sorry.” To make his point, he recalls the late Dev Anand’s words: “He used to say, never mind good, bad or indifferent reports. The important thing is that you are being written about.” Truer words were never spoken.
Here’s a look at the public spats and the even-more-public praises.
KATRINA KAIF, ANUSHKA SHARMA When reports of Katrina’s alleged fights with Anushka Sharma and Kareena gained ground last year, the actor came out in praise of her colleagues. In an earlier interview to HT Café, she had told us, “Kareena is a huge star and a wonderful actor. I can guarantee you that this report is not true. We don’t fight like kids. We are not like that in real life.” In a recent interview, Anushka had also stated, “Kareena is a fine and talented actor.”
PRIYANKA CHOPRA PC and Kareena became friends during Aitraaz (2004) but fell out over Shahid Kapoor. On Karan Johar’s show in 2010, Kareena made fun of Priyanka’s accent, saying, “I wonder where she got it from!” PC had retorted: “I want to tell her that I got my accent from the same place where her boyfriend (Saif Ali Khan) got his.” Then the two met at the Police Awards function in Mumbai and hugged, apparently on Saif’s insistence. Recently, PC (who is on a patch-up spree) went on the sets of Kareena’s Heroine, signalling a truce.
FREIDA PINTO The actor praised Kareena recently for changing the pay scales of female actors in the industry. In an interview to Flaunt Magazine she said, “I feel like we’ve kind of experienced a shift in humanity. In India, there has been a large disparity in how much a female and male actors gets paid, but this year, one actor (Kareena Kapoor) changed all that.”
