All those who complained of the lack of its celebrated ‘happy vibe’ on the first day of the NH7 Weekender Festival had much to thank for today. The air felt fresher, the stages seemed newer and the acts were better.
On The Dewarists stage, festival debutants Maati Baani (a folk-rock collaborative band) brought on stage a bevy of artistes — from a Kutchhi piper to a French vocalist. Bad sound was the constant impediment while they performed, but they pulled through well. At the Arena, Mumbai rockers Scribe’s act saw the usual hysteria. But front man Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy’s mouthing of filthy abuses — directed apparently at an audience-member who invited his wrath — was very unbecoming of a veteran musician.
Accompanied by Jivraj ‘Jiver’ Singh, singer Suman Sridhar presented her brand of ‘poetry-meets-songs’ music on The Other Stage, and drew mixed reviews. The most disappointed attendees were the ones who expected her to break into ‘Hawai hawai’ or ‘Khoya khoya chand’.
Meanwhile Shantanu Pandit and Nischay Parekh — the two rising poster boys of indie singer songwriters — played their new and older material. Placing Slow Club after Maati Baani was a programming oversight, as the band stuck out like a sore thumb among the otherwise impressive line-up. Though Midival Punditz’ set was predictable, Vachan delivered an extraordinary set at the Wolves Den.
Day two ended on a high note with The Raghu Dixit Project. Despite having played songs mostly from their upcoming album Jag Changa, they had almost cast a spell on the crowd. Raghu’s showmanship is par excellence and that’s why he’s played to packed audiences at all the festival editions so far. Although we did miss the Chanpattna dolls he brought along last year.
