Film connoisseurs in India will soon be able to view at home classics of world cinema like Downfall (German/ Russian), The Sea Inside (Spanish), Jean De Florette (French), Amen (English/ German) and L'amant(French/ English).
These films will be among the more then 100 titles available to Indian viewers following an initiative by distribution firm Shemaroo Entertainment with the support of film maker Subhash Ghai's media institute, Whistling Woods International.
"This is a fantastic initiative. As movie sensibilities evolve among Indian audiences and they take a global outlook, there is a critical mass developing for all types of cinema," said Ghai.
"I believe such initiatives will help promote our understanding of various cultures and cinema styles thereby raising benchmarks of film-making in India," he added.
Hiren Gada of Shemaroo said they had tried to pick the finest world cinema titles from the best makers.
