As Deepika Padukone turns 27 today, she talks about her fondest memories and makes a birthday wish.
What is the best birthday present you have received?
This year, my family (father Prakash Padukone, mother Ujjala and sister Anisha) has flown down from Bengaluru especially to be with me today. It’s one of the best gifts I could have asked for.
Any birthday memory that is special to you?
A new amusement park had opened in Bengaluru when I was in school. I remember taking all my close friends there on my birthday. It was so special; the memory of that day is fresh even now.
Is there any one gift you’ve treasured over the years?
On my 21st birthday, my mother gave me a very special ring since I am fond of different kinds of rings. And it’s all the more unique for me because my mother went out of her way and personally had it designed. Ever since I received that ring, it has been very close to my heart.
What’s your birthday wish?
The year 2012 was great for me. I got a great response to my performance in Cocktail. And now, as 2013 begins, I have some big films including Chennai Express, Ram Leela and Race 2 lined up. So I only wish that my efforts pay off this year as well, with audiences loving my films and performances.
How do you plan on celebrating your birthday?
We haven’t planned anything because the way things stand, my family might end up coming to the Ram Leela sets since I am shooting for the film today too (laughs). This only goes on to show how caught up I am with my work. But I love it, so no complaints.

Deepika Padukone is the perfect Leela: Ranveer Singh
Deepika Padukone bagged the role of the female lead in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram Leela (working title) after talks with Kareena Kapoor didn’t materialise. And although the film’s male lead is “disappointed” about not getting to work with Bebo, Ranveer Singh feels Deepika is “the closest” the makers have got to finding the perfect Leela.
“She definitely looks the part better than anyone else. When Bhansali sir and I started working on the film a few months ago, we browsed through lots of books on rural Gujarat. He would often point to pictures of traditional Gujarati girls and say, ‘This is what Leela looks like’. They are slender, dusky and have sharp features,” says Ranveer.
