Remember those pendants that you could open to a picture of you and your lover? Now imagine if it could store a 1,000 pictures instead of just that one. Or if your diamond bracelet could also hold all your emails and songs.
The latest fashion accessories in the market are no ordinary pieces of jewellery, but pen drives that accommodate several GBs of data. The much used storage devices now come in fancy designs as neckpieces and bracelets. Available in the market for both men and women, they come in various shapes and sizes. For example, a heart-shaped stainless steel necklace is also a pen drive with a 4GB flash memory. It can even be a diamond bracelet. Priced at Rs 500 upwards (some cost upto Rs 20,000), these are available at leading gadget stores across the city and also online.
“I recently bought a 2GB pen drive shaped like a toad. It had a silver chain attached to it,” says Shweta Bansal. “I have lost so many pen drives in office, but now I can wear it as a neckpiece. It is made up of colourful beads, is not very expensive,” says Indrani Sethi, a financial consultant.
These pen drives are not only used by individuals, but also by a lot of companies for their brand promotion. Sudip De of Moserbaer says, “We do a lot of customisation for corporates. We also have pen drives with beads and precious stones and we are now coming up with gold-plated chains.”
But not everyone’s excited. Sourabh Panhotra, an engineer, says, “I don’t care about shape, for me what matters is the memory and the cost.” “But I wouldn’t mind gifting a heart-shaped pendant to my crush in office,” says Amit Mehta, 27.
