In the recently released

Knight and Day

, Cameron Diaz plays June Havens, an ordinary woman whose chance encounter with a spy flips her world around and sends her on a dangerous race across the globe. Diaz talks about her experiences…

What excited you about this project?

I was drawn to the film not only for its high-level action, but because I saw it as an impassioned love story between two people who find each other from opposite worlds. Roy and June have that thing where they each bring out something interesting and unexpected in the other, and I thought that would be so much fun to explore on this thrilling ride with Tom.

Cameron Diaz Is this another spy movie?

Not at all! This film is much more romantic and funny. One of the fun questions the movie asks is: even if you are a spy capable of bringing down a plane or saving the world . . . can you handle a relationship? You have these two wonderfully opposite characters — a woman who has always had a fantasy of going somewhere but has never let go enough to do it, and a man who has been absolutely everywhere, but has never let himself know love.

How is Tom Cruise as a co-star?

Tom has a very high standard. So that’s a wonderful thing. That’s what you know you’re getting when you’re working with Tom. You know that you’re getting someone who is dedicated to bringing the best product forward possible, and to do that, you have to be engaged in the process. Besides, he is just amazing.

And he does his own stunts in the film…

Tom is like a professional stuntman. If he wasn’t a movie star, he would be the best stuntman in the business.

You, too have done your own stunts in the film…

I love training for fight sequences. It’s a week of getting bruises and cuts and sprains, but it’s also a lot of fun. When I went to the Golden Globes this year in the middle of filming, I had lumps up and down my arms and scraped knees. I loved it!

What do you do when you’re not busy with a film?

I enjoy hanging out with pals and lazing on beaches, though I hardly have time for that. But I am very particular about getting a good sleep.

You are usually a very cheerful person. But are there moments that get you down?

I’m not always happy. I do have moments when I’m growly and rough. But I don’t put those moods on people I don’t know. It wouldn’t be fair. When I have my bad days, I share them with the people who love me.
