Ever since word got out that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will be hosting a private dinner tonight for US President Barack Obama and his wife, Michelle, the Capital’s who’s who have been in a scurry trying to secure an invite.
The lucky few who are on the guest list include these names from Bollywood — lyricist Javed Akhtar and his wife, actor-activist Shabana Azmi, Bollywood star Aamir Khan and Oscar winner AR Rahman.
Talking to HT City about being invited to dinner, Akhtar says, “It would be quite something to meet the world’s most powerful man.”A night before the dinner, Akhtar still wasn’t sure what he was wearing to the dinner. "Usually, Shabana decides what I wear to such events, I am sure she has something nice in mind. I am looking forward to meeting Obama and Michelle in a relaxed setting. It would be interesting to see the world's most powerful man relaxing over dinner," he says.
Asked what he would like to discuss with Obama, Akhtar says, "Not politics, in such a setting we should leave politics out! It’s a social occasion and we’re not going there as activists."
Though AR Rahman was unavailable for comment, a source close to the musician says, “He is excited as he admires Obama.”
When contacted, actor Aamir Khan’s spokesperson could not confirm whether he would be attending the dinner.
