If you thought only stressed-out workaholics deserved weekend getaways, you might want to rethink. A city pet group is organising a two-day trek camp for pets to outskirts with activities designed specially for canines. “Living in the city with its noise takes a toll on our pets too. They too feel tied-up. The camp focuses on ways to let themselves run free and unwind peacefully,” says Pooja Sathe-Gawande of Crazy K9 Campers.
The Muddy Paws Retreat, to be held at a farm in Manor (approx 110 kms from Mumbai), offers pets a trek to a nearby dam, a swim in the river and various fun task-based indoor and outdoor group games. “Through these group activities, pets get a chance to socialise with others of their kind. They can mix with other breeds, make friends and even find suitable mates,” says Sathe-Gawande. Not wishing to burden pets with too many things, the first day of the camp is usually dedicated to easy routines like a swim and games while longer treks are planned on the second day.
Every camp includes around 20 pets and 30-40 people; stay, meals and toys/accessories for games are included in the package. Families and couples often choose to accompany their pet on the camp. Sathe-Gawande explains that this may also help in strengthening ties with between the owner and pet: “Owners who are first-timers on the trek express apprehension about whether their pets will be able to do the tasks and follow instructions. But the camp is not a place to show off what your pet can do, but to have a good time together. And the pets definitely come out of the camp more confident and happy.”
