While fashionistas and style editors the world over are waiting breathlessly for a glimpse of Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, Prince William’s possible wardrobe for the big day has been sidelined. But while the bride might be set to grab all eye balls, the groom, it seems, will also break many a hearts. “It would be great to see William follow his father’s footsteps and wear his Royal Air Force (RAF) or even the Naval uniform in full regalia, especially considering what a dutiful armyman he is. And this is the biggest wedding of this century so everyone expects him to match the bride in every way,” says fashion writer Varun Rana. George VI too wore a RAF uniform at his wedding and William has already served in all the armed forces of the country.
But some are hoping that he treads a different path with his choice of attire. “A morning suit with tails would suit the very traditional tone of the wedding. Plus, considering how tall he is, it would look effortlessly chic,” says menswear designer Rajvi Mohan. William could also choose to wear his formal Household Calvary Uniform which many members of the Royal family wear to official functions.
Bride-to-be already a style icon
Britain’s princess-to-be, Kate Middleton, 29, has garnered fans for her sartorial statements. Becoming the first to wear a black dress at a friend’s wedding, otherwise considered a fashion faux pas in Britain, the soon-to-be-royal also plans to wear her hair loose on her wedding day instead of a traditional chignon. We quizzed the experts to find Kate’s four most impressive moments along the way to becoming a style icon.
Hats off to her
Kate has been sporting a mix of quirky and elegant hats at various public events. Apparently, her area of influence has spread across the Atlantic to the US, where hat sales have reportedly gone up. Expert speak: “I think Kate Middleton is quite a trendsetter. She has worn all sorts of hats. The comeback of the trend for hats may very well be dedicated to her,” says Delhi-based designer Nida Mahmood.
In the trenches
A piece of clothing traditionally associated with the British, Kate probably has a closet full of trench coats, though she sticks to a certain pattern of pairing them with black stockings, heels and a practical clutch. Expert speak: “She’s bringing many classy items back in style. One of those is the trench coat. She wears them fantastically. You should never go for too many accessories with a classy trench coat. She pairs them perfectly with a clutch and stockings,” says designer Abdul Halder.
Given her future lies almost completely in the public eye, Kate has practiced a conservative yet chic style of dressing, flaunting suit dresses paired with thin waist belts and high boots. Expert speak: “Kate looks fabulous in structured suit dresses. She has a great body to support it and she accessorises them very well with waist belts, hats and knee-length boots. This trend was lost until recently, so thanks to her for reviving it,” says designer Anjalee Kapoor.
The blue Issa wrap dress Kate wore at her official engagement announcement was sold out in stores moments later and spawned many knock-offs. This is a style that seems to be dear to her heart as she’s often spotted in similar dresses. Expert speak: “The best thing about Kate is that she believes in creating style statements with silhouettes as simple as the wrap dress. Now with Kate wearing it, everyone has started appreciating the trend,” says designer Pam Mehta.
