Yashpal Sharma, popular character artiste in Hindi movies and a staple in Prakash Jha’s films, has become a villain in a recently started daily soap, Mera Naam Karegi Roshan, on Zee TV. He is currently fascinated with a custom-made jeep on the sets that’s been created keeping his character in mind.
"My niece watches the show and loves my work in it. But more than that, she finds the jeep extremely fascinating. She says, "Chacha, kya jeep hai!" (Uncle, what a jeep!) That makes me feel that a lot of kids must be watching the show and finding the jeep as exciting," Sharma exults.
The jeep has a sword holder, a few guns, an axe and a gamut of other weapons attached to it. Sharma laughs, "I’m a destructive guy in the show. The jeep was painted red and made to look like it wears lion-skin. It’s become a reason for everyone to envy my character."
The reason Sharma, who has done episodic work in TV shows, moved from movies to a daily soap is that he didn’t find any great roles coming his way. "After Lagaan (2001) and Gangajal (2003), I haven’t found great work in films. The roles producers approach me for are not even worth mentioning. So, I dabbled in theatre for creative satisfaction and now, I have moved to the small screen because I want to have a lot of diverse work on my profile and not something that’s monotonous," asserts Sharma.
Given that his most-loved director Prakash Jha is working on Aarakshan, would he like to go back to the movies? "Yes," he exclaims. "I missed out on Raajneeti because I had committed time to Hook Ya Crook. But now, I will be working with Prakashji on Aarakshan. I can’t wait to start."
