Shabana has acted in more than one hundred Hindi films, both in the mainstream as well as in parallel cinema. Here's her Shabanafilmography.



Sorry Bhai! (2008)- This is a film starring Shabana Azmi, Boman Irani, Sanjay Suri, Sharman Joshi and Chitrangada Singh. It is directed by Onir. He has previously written-edited-directed My Brother Nikhil (2005) and Bas Ek Pal (2006).

Loins of Punjab Presents (2008)- It's a 2007 film directed by Manish Acharya. It stars Shabana Azmi, Ayesha Dharker and Ajay Naidu.

Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. (2007) - It is produced by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani through Excel Entertainment and has marked the debut of Reema Kagti as a director.

Umrao Jaan (2006) - A Bollywood production starring Aishwarya Rai as the famous courtesan. The film is directed by J.P. Dutta and also stars Shabana Azmi, Sunil Shetty, Abhishek Bachchan, Divya Dutta, Himani Shivpuri and Kulbhushan Kharbanda.

Waterborne (2005) - Waterborne is a 2005 independent film by Indian American film maker Ben Rekhi about the fates of three different groups of people after a terrorist attack pollutes the water supply of Los Angeles, resulting in a severe water shortage. It stars Christopher Masterson, Ajay Naidu, Jake Muxworthy, Jon Gries, Christopher Berry, Shabana Azmi and Mageina Tovah.

15 Park Avenue (2005) - It's a 2005 National Film Award winning English-language Indian film directed by Aparna Sen. It starred Shabana Azmi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Soumitra Chatterjee, Waheeda Rehman and Rahul Bose.

Morning Raga (2004) - Morning Raga is an Indian film with most of the dialogue in English, released in 2004. Directed by Mahesh Dattani and starring Bollywood stars Shabana Azmi and Perizad Zorabian.

Tehzeeb (2003) - Directed by Khalid Mohammed. It premiered on 21 November 2003. The film stars Shabana Azmi, Urmila Matondkar, Diya Mirza, Arjun Rampal and Rishi Kapoor in a special appearance.

Makdee (2002) - Promoted as The Web Of The Witch in English, is a children's film in Hindi directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, starring Shabana Azmi, Makrand Deshpande, Shweta Prasad and Alaap Mazgaonkar.

Godmother (1999) - This movie had Shabana Azmi playing the author backed lead role for which she won National Film Award for ShabanaBest Actress while Sanjeev Abhyankar won the National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer for the film.

1947: Earth (1998)- Directed by Deepa Mehta, the film is based upon Bapsi Sidhwa's novel, Cracking India. Earth is the second part of a trilogy by Mehta. It was preceded by Fire (1996) and followed by Water (2005). Star cast includes: Aamir Khan, Maia Sethna, Nandita Das and Shabana Azmi

Side Streets (1998) - Side Streets is a 1998 Merchant Ivory film directed by Tony Gerber. Cast included Valeria Golino, Shashi Kapoor, Shabana Azmi, Miho Nikaido, Art Malik, Victor Argo, Rosario Dawson, Jennifer Esposito.

Saaz (1997) - Produced and directed by Sai Paranjpye and released in 1998, starring Aruna Irani and Shabana Azmi in lead roles.

Fire (1996) - Written and directed by Deepa Mehta starring Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das.

In Custody (1993) - A film by Merchant Ivory Productions. Directed by Ismail Merchant, with a screenplay by Anita Desai and Shahrukh Husain. It is based upon Desai's 1984 Booker Prize nominated novel In Custody. The cast included Shashi Kapoor, Sushma Seth, Shabana Azmi, Om Puri and Tinnu Anand.

City of Joy (1992) - City of Joy is a 1992 film directed by Roland Joffé, with a screenplay by Mark Medoff. It is based upon the novel of the same name by Dominique Lapierre. Cast included Patrick Swayze, Om Puri, Pauline Collins, Shabana Azmi and Ayesha Dharker.

Ek Din Achanak (1989) - Directed by Mrinal Sen, the cast included Shreeram Lagoo, Shabana Azmi and Aparna Sen

Madame Sousatzka (1988)- Directed by John Schlesinger, with a screenplay by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, it's based on the novel of Shabana the same name by Bernice Rubens. Cast included Shirley MacLaine, Navin Chowdhry, Shabana Azmi, Peggy Ashcroft, Twiggy, Leigh Lawson and Barry Douglas.

The Bengali Night (1988) - It's a semi-autobiographical film based upon the Mircea Eliade 1933 Romanian novel, Bengal Nights, directed by Nicolas Klotz and starring Hugh Grant, Soumitra Chatterjee and Shabana Azmi.

Genesis (1986) - Directed by Mrinal Sen, the star cast included Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and M.K. Raina.

Khandhar (1984) - Directed by Mrinal Sen, the film starred Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapoor.

Paar (1984) - Directed by Goutam Ghose, the film's cast included Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Om Puri.

Mandi (1983) - Directed by Shyam Benegal, the film's star cast includes Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Smita Patil.

Masoom (1983) - This was Shekhar Kapur's directorial debut. The critically acclaimed film starred Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Tanuja, Supriya Pathak and Saeed Jaffrey, as well as child actors Jugal Hansraj and Urmila Matondkar. The screenplay and dialogues were written by Gulzar and the music was composed by R.D. Burman.

Arth (1982) - Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, starring Shabana Azmi, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Smita Patil, Raj Kiran and Rohini Hattangadi.

Albert Pinto Ko Gussa Kyon Aata Hai (1981) - Directed by Saeed Akhtar Mirza, film's cast included Naseruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Satish Shah, Smita Patil, Dilip Dhawan and Om Puri.

Sparsh (1980) - The feature film is directed by Sai Paranjpye. The cast included Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Sudha Chopra and Om Puri.

Shatranj Ke Khiladi (1977) - This Satyajit Ray directed film is based on Munshi Premchand's short story of the same name. Cast includes Amjad Khan, Richard Attenborough, Sanjeev Kumar, Saeed Jaffrey, Shabana Azmi, David Abraham and Tom Alter.

Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) - The film was directed by Manmohan Desai. The star cast included Amitabh Bachchan, Vinod Khanna and Rishi Kapoor, Parveen Babi, Shabana Azmi and Neetu Singh.

Junoon (1978) - Produced by Shashi Kapoor and directed by Shyam Benegal, the film's cast included Shashi Kapoor, Nafisa Ali, Tom Alter, Shabana Azmi, Jennifer Kendal, Karan Kapoor, Kunal Kapoor, Sanjana Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Naseeruddin Shah, Deepti Naval, Pearl Padamsee and Sushma Seth.

Faasla (1976) - Directed by K Abbas, the star cats of this film included Shabana Azmi, Raman Khanna, Komila Wirk, David, Chand Usmani, Paintal, Yunus Parwaiz, Ravikant, Dinesh Thakur, Imtiaz, Nitin Sethi, Vinod Mehra, Alka and Satish Kaul.

Nishant (1976) - Directed by Shyam Benegal and written by noted playwright Vijay Tendulkar, the film's cast included Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Smita Patil.

Parinay (1974) - Directed by Kantialal Rathod, the film's cast included Romesh Sharma, Shabana Azmi, Asha Sachdev, Dinesh Thakur, Priti Ganguly and T P Jain.

Ankur (1974) - This was Shyam Benegal's directorial debut. It was also the debut of Indian actors Shabana Azmi and Anant Nag. Though Shabana Azmi had acted in other films, Ankur was her first release.
