With numerous records, a World Cup win and legions of faithful fans around the world, Sachin Tendulkar is arguably India’s most loved sports star. As the cricketer turns 40 today, legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who is reportedly a very big fan, hopes that he continues playing with the same spirit.
“I wish him a very long life and hope that he keeps playing cricket. Just like singing, one can’t learn how to play good cricket. It’s something you choose from your heart as a profession, like Sachin has,” says Lata Mangeshkar. The Master Blaster retired from the One Day International (ODI) format in December last year, but Mangeshkar feels that he has the Midas touch and will be able to pick up any sport that he chooses.
“Recently, I learnt that he is concentrating on golf. I wish him equal success in that game if he is taking it seriously,” says the singer. Mangeshkar regrets that she hasn’t been able to wish Sachin in person.
“I wish him every year but I could never visit him on his birthday because our father’s (Marathi theatre actor and Hindustani classical vocalist Pandit Deenanath Mangeshkar) death anniversary is on that day. It’s always celebrated in a big way giving away awards in his name. It is his 71st death anniversary today,” says Mangeshkar, who is awarding Marathi author and historian Vishwas Patil this year. “We are also planning to give an award to Jaya Bachchan, but she will not be able to attend the ceremony,” she says.
