Various films have used the laughter is the best medicine maxim in the past. Now, Delhi-based stand-up comedian Papa CJ is going to put it to test in real situations, in hospitals among actual doctors, patients and visitors.
“I’m willing to go to any hospital absolutely anywhere in the country,” says CJ, who is offering to perform at any medical institution for free on any given Sunday. “I just want the cost of travelling covered; there will be no charge for the act. Sunday is also a good day because that’s when patients get a lot of visitors.” The best part, according to CJ, is that this offer doesn’t come with an expiry date. “I’ll always be open to doing this,” he says.
Ask him what inspired the initiative, titled The Best Medicine, and he says, “I did a show in Kolkata last year, when at the end of the gig, an 86-year-old lady came up to me and said, ‘I haven’t laughed so much in 30 years’. That’s the best thing anyone has ever said to me. So here I am, doing just that.”
