Three days after Mumbai resident, Jonathan Fernandes passed away, his friends and family are lashing out at false reportage about circumstances that lead to his demise. The young drummer of city metal band Reverrse Polarity and trained pilot was in the Capital for an examination and was at a friend’s house when he allegedly fell to his death from a seventh floor balcony.
Shocked family members and friends were still grappling with the shock of his untimely death, when the following day’s top-read daily carried a report, where an unnamed ‘official’ called Fernandes ‘heavily drunk’. However, post mortem results revealed that he had no alcohol in his body.
Immediately, Fernandes’ friends took to Facebook to set the record straight. Vishwesh Krishnamurthy, vocalist of band Scribe, was one of the first few to react. “Jonathan was not a party animal and the press report deemed him as an irresponsible pilot who was taught a lesson for heavy drinking. It’s shocking, because I have known him for years and this is not how he should be remembered,” says Krishnamurthy, who along with his band and members from Blakc, Khiladi, Bhayank Maut and Reverrse Polarity were present at the funeral.
Band-member Shikhar Manchanda is equally vocal. “Jonathan was committed to music and flying. His family doesn’t deserve to be told that their son died a drunk pilot,” he says.
While there is a lot of misdirected angst online, the band’s fan page and Fernandes’ wall on Facebook, are filled with condolences and messages seeking an explanation from the media over the false reportage. Meanwhile, Krishnamurthy is busy putting together a tribute concert in Fernandes’ memory.
