On Saturday, British comedian Russell Brand and American pop singer Katy Perry tied the knot amid high drama in Rajasthan. A day before, Brand’s guests were involved in a scuffle with Indian mediapersons at the Ranthambore National Park while they were on a tiger safari.
In an attempt to stop reporters from taking pictures of Brand, who was also part of the safari, a guest named Daniel James got off his jeep and abused and threatened the photographers. During the scuffle, the Hindustan Times photographer was also pushed around while an agency reporter was hurt on his head and left bleeding.
Before the incident took place, however, the wedding party was on in full swing. On Friday afternoon, the guests enjoyed a camel ride at the Aman-I-Khas resort, where they are staying. A mehendi ceremony had taken place the previous evening, and most guests could be seen sporting henna tattoos. Even Russell Brand had henna tattooed on his right hand. Comedian David Baddiel, was seen with his daughter and his girlfriend Morwenna Banks. Banks was delighted with her mehendi. "I just love the Indian traditions and am completely enjoying them," she said.
Eighty five guests were expected to attend the wedding last night. Rapper P Diddy wrote a song specially for the ceremony. Given the proximity of the venue to the national park, which is a tiger reserve and also home to leopards, wild boars and hyenas, the Sawai Madhopur district police had issued a warning that the wedding would be stopped if it disrupted the wildlife.
“We will not hesitate to stop the wedding if the laws are not obeyed. We will not allow playing of musical instruments and blaring of loudspeakers after 10pm,” said the district police chief Vishnu Kant.
R&B sensation Rihanna was spotted boarding an international flight at the LA airport on Friday night. The singer was scheduled to arrive in India on Saturday. Perry’s maid of honour, Rihanna had said she would be in a Stella McCartney dress at the wedding.
