A salty mist of ocean spray, a gush of arctic wind and a lurching ship fatefully crashing into an iceberg. Moviegoers can imagine the scenes when watching the just-released 3D version of James Cameron's Titanic, but audiences in 4DX theaters actually experience these sensations with Jack and Rose, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
Since 2009, 4DX theaters have added the dimension of motion-simulation seats, moving the audience around like a ride in a theme park attraction with jolts, pitching and rolling coordinated to the action of the movie.
Now the South Korean company CJ 4DPlex Co. has created yet another dimension with special effects including wind, fog, lighting and scents, reports The Hollywood Reporter.
On April 5, in 26 theaters across South Korea, Mexico, China and Thailand, select 4DX theaters are providing audiences with an immersion into the film environment using "short bursts of sharp air" and "face water" to accompany screenings of Titanic in 3D.
The CJ 4DPlex office opened in Los Angeles and the company plans to bring the extrasensory theaters to the US, expanding to 800 cinemas worldwide by 2016, according to a statement.
"We work with the world's leading studios and filmmakers to bring movie magic alive for audiences," Chief Executive Ho Seung Lee said in the release.
The 4DX experience is in theaters outfitted with the technology for screenings of The Hunger Games and John Carter. The Avengers is the next film to get the enhanced treatment.
