Six months prior to the debut of the upcoming Batman film, tickets for screenings went on sale through the US-based online cinema retailer Fandango, and IMAX midnight shows sold out in New York and Los Angeles.

The last film in director Christopher Nolan's trilogy, with Christian Bale reprising his role Bruce Wayne/Batman and Anne Hathaway starring as Selina Kyle/Catwoman, opens worldwide July 19-28.

The film takes place eight years after Nolan's last film in the franchise left off. The Dark Knight Rises follows criminal Bane arriving in Gotham City and forcing Batman to resurface.

The film's co-stars include Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Inception), Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailer Soldier Spy), Marion Cotillard (Midnight in Paris), Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, and Tom Hardy as the villain Bane.

Tickets reportedly went on sale in December after the film's six-minute prologue played prior to Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol. The film's viral marketing campaign may have alerted fans.

By comparison, Avatar tickets were available only four months in advance.
