A broken hand and two designer slings — that’s what Oscar-winning filmmaker Baz Luhrmann will remember of his week-long visit to India.
The Moulin Rouge director, who is in the country for a charity event, went on a bike-trail through Rajasthan with artist Vincent Fantauzzo. He got riding lessons at Delhi airport’s parking lot before biking off to Rajasthan. He swerved to avoid a man who jumped off a speeding bus, fell and fractured his wrist. The man told the filmmaker he jumped because ‘there is no bus stop here’.
Luhrmann found his white gauze sling “boring” and asked for something “dramatic”. “He asked for two — for the evening dinner in black to match his dress and one that was ethnic and interesting. The hotel staff got him Jaipuri kapda and a black duppatta, which he wore as a sling,” said Mitali Bajaj, spokeperson for Mumbai’s Le Sutra - the Art Hotel, where he was staying.
On Tuesday, Luhrmann met Bollywood stars Gul Panag, Imtiaz Ali, Dino Morea, Celina Jaitly, Kabir Bedi and Pooja Bedi at a dinner hosted for him. During dinner, Fantauzzo said, “I went all over Rajasthan shaking hands and Baz went all over breaking hands — he had four accidents in three days."
