Stay informed: Make sure your family members or close friends know of your whereabouts, how long you will be gone, and approximately when you will return. If you are going to be late, call friends or family. Carry a cellphone with you and programme important numbers on quick-dial.
Identify safe zones: Take the longer route if the shortcut takes you through an unfamiliar or undesirable road, and look out for safe spots such as a police station, a friend’s house, restaurants or malls en route, in case in an emergency.
Tank up: Don’t go into unfamiliar territory without enough fuel in your vehicle. There’s a chance of getting lost or running into traffic delays, so never leave your tank more than half-empty. Also, learn all you can, about public transportation.
Avoid contact: If you’re walking towards a shady person or group, walk in a different direction or cross the street and enter a store so it doesn’t seem obvious that you are intimidated.
