His Khoya Khoya Chand got lost in oblivion, but his 'hit' list includes Metro and Gangster. Now the actor awaits the release of National award winner Jahanu Barua's Har Pal. Shiney Ahuja in a frank speak with Roshmila Bhattacharya.

Your next film will be National Award winning director Jahanu Barua’s Har Pal.. moving away from the mainstream?
I’d describe it as a meaningful film within the commercial format.

Since the story revolves around the girl and her surrogate father, won’t you end up being a spectator?
Despite the title, Gangster was the girl’s story, from beginning to end. But once the film released, it was a different story. Ditto for Hazaron Khwaishein Aisi that had more established actors like Kay Kay (Menon). It’s better that I let the viewers answer that since that’s the verdict that counts.

Preity Zinta says she felt like Dharmendra’s third daughter.. did you feel like his third son?
Sholay and Chupke Chupke are among my favourite films. In Metro I didn’t get a chance to work with Dharmji, he met me with a lot of warmth during Har Pal. I’ll treasure those moments but for me he’s still a revered icon.

Preity has said you won’t be on her guest list.
She’s right, we don’t socialise but we work well together. I’m not the partying kind. After pack-up I return home to my daughter. I don’t want to miss out on even a moment of her growing up.

Buzz is that Sudhir Mishra who was to make Aur Devdas with Lara Dutta, Chitrangada Singh and you for PNC, has taken the project to Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar and will now be making it with Akhtar, Kareena Kapoor and another top actress?
Since it was the producer and not the director who signed me, professionally, I’m answerable only to PNC. I haven’t got any intimation from them that the film is not happening. You’ll have to take your question to them.

What’s your take on Dev D?
Don’t have one. I’ve read the script of Aur Devdas but I have yet to see Dev D.

Has your recent commercial failures affected you professionally?
Following the economic slowdown, the pace of the industry has slowed down in general. But I still get the same number of offers.

The difference is that during Haazaron.. I had only to focus on Vikram Malhotra. Today there are so many other factors like the story, director, my character, even whether the producer green-lighting the project can take it forward to a successful commercial release. I’ve become more careful today because once I’ve committed to a project there is no going back.

Where did Khoya Khoya Chand and Hijack go wrong?
I knew that Khoya Khoya would be critically acclaimed but going by the script, it wouldn’t be a huge commercial success. Still Zaffar won me the Best Actor Kalakar Award. I made the mistake of okaying Hijack without reading the final script. My instincts told me that the story wasn’t working, I shouldn’t have shot for it. It harmed me.. and Kunal (Shivdasani) more.

Will you do another film with Kunal?
Why not but not with a flawed script? He is a dear friend, I have confidence in him as a director, we still have long lunches together without discussing work.

You had problems with Mohit Suri during Woh Lamhe and since then you’ve been out of the Bhatt camp?
I’d love to work with Bhattsahab again. I like Mohit as a friend and a person. But our styles of working are very different.

You’re supposed to be doing a film with Mani Ratnam called Classmate also featuring Hrithik Roshan, Fardeen Khan and Bhumika Chawla.
Sounds interesting but the last time I met Mani sir was when he offered me a role in Guru that I didn’t do. I’m in talks for a couple of big projects. One of them is like Gangster but with a different take. The other is a genre I’ve never tried before. Life’s beautiful, thank you.
