The who’s who of Bollywood dreads sitting on his ‘couch’, and he juggles filmmaking, hosting a chat show and judging reality shows effortlessly. There’s a little secret to how Karan Johar manages it all. “I don’t have a personal life, so whatever eight-nine hours I get for myself, I use for my work.” And why does the 41-year-old not have a personal life? “Well, work is my marriage, and films are my relationships,” he laughs.
KJo, who’s currently busy judging the fifth season of TV reality show, India’s Got Talent, is producing eight films this year, including, Hasee Toh Phasee, 2 States, Ungli, Shuddhi and Badtameez Dil, featuring several biggies of B-town, right from Hrithik Roshan to Kareena Kapoor.
Asked why most of these stars look intimidated when they come on his chat show, he says, “That’s because they know that I will ask them all sorts of uncomfortable questions.” And what gives him the courage to put them in the dock so unabashedly? “I am good friends with all of them so I can ask them a li’l bit more than the others would,” says the filmmaker, adding, “And I know, if a journalist asks them all those questions, they might walk out but they won’t ever walk out on me.” So, is creating controversy the purpose? “It’s all in jest, but isn’t it good, in a way? I think I am providing more fodder for gossip every week with my show than anyone else!”
