The forthcoming Cannes International Film Festival will bring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor together on the red carpet. Both the actors are the face of an international cosmetic brand. In fact, Sonam was to have made her Cannes debut, representing a major cosmetics brand, a couple of years earlier. But she lost her moment in the spotlight when she reportedly called Aishwarya an ‘aunty’.
It was only recently that Abhishek Bachchan engineered a truce between his wife and his Players co-star during a recent schedule in New Zealand. Sonam rubbishes the rumours vehemently: “Aishwarya has always been nice to me and vice versa. We both studied at the same school and like me, she too worked with Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, 1999) early in her career. And then there’s L’Oreal Paris, which was one of her first endorsements too. She’s a sweet and dignified person and her husband is an actor with whom I have an instant action reaction. Abhishek is the easiest co-actor I’ve worked with.”
Sonam is yet to pick out her outfit for her maiden Cannes outing but promises to pull out all the stops to ensure a glamorous debut on the international red carpet. “It’ll be something incredible and different. I love dressing up and I’ll try to look as graceful as I can. The brand has a great team of make-up artistes and stylists. And many designers want to showcase their designs on this platform. So I’m sure I’ll be spoilt for choice,” she says.
Sonam will attend the event along Aishwarya and Freida Pinto. Over the last decade, Aishwarya has invited some criticism for her hair, make-up and clothes at the French Riviera. Sonam believes in taking all criticism with a pinch of salt. “I’ve worn some really absurd clothes at times and people have liked them because I looked happy in them,” she points out.
“The trick is to go out there and have a good time. If you’re enjoying yourself, everything looks good.” Sonam has yet to get the itinerary so she has no idea what events have been lined up for her. “I’ve never been to Cannes before so I’m looking forward to exploring the city and meeting all the celebs too,” she says.
What about building a network and trying to snag some international projects? “I’m not looking at Hollywood yet,” she retorts. “My Bollywood projects are enough to keep me busy for the time being.”
