The underworld is considered a one-way street. But if fugitive don Chhota Rajan’s alleged right hand man D.K. Rao (37) is to be believed, he has “cut himself off” from the crime world.
Rao, accused of masterminding the killing of gangster O.P. Singh from inside the Arthur Road jail, was released on bail about two weeks ago. He spoke to Hindustan Times
about the 10 years he spent inside jail and his future plans. Excerpts
You are out of the jail after 10 years, what do you plan to do now?
Ten years is a long time. I have been away from my family and my son. I now want to devote my time to the service of society. I am planning to open a yoga centre that would be registered with Swami Ramdev’s Patanjali Yogpeeth. I am also planning to open a free legal aid centre for poor people.
Why a yoga centre?
I have always practiced yoga. Yoga helped me to stay alive when police pumped 19 bullets into me (in 1998).
Are you planning to join politics?
No, but I will work for the people in Dharavi. There are many problems which need attention but politicians are just interested in getting votes.
How do you schedule your day?
I step out of my house only to attend the court hearings. I have cut off all my underworld connections and started my life afresh. I also play with my son whom I left when he was two years old.
How do you support your family?
My elder brother is an auto-rickshaw driver and at present he is the only earning member in my family.
There are reports that Chhota Rajan is planning to kill Ajmal Kasab through you?
I don’t know anything about it. I have not contacted Rajan for past so many months and I don’t think its true.
