Now, Delhi University is all set to have a police station where the SHO of the station will be a female police officer. To tackle the menace of sexual harassment that many college going girls often face, the police has decided to have women police officers patrol the campus area. Also, there will be helpdesks all around the campus for students. HT City asked college students about this move.

“I think it is a great idea especially for the ladies. As for the helpdesks being around, it will especially benefit those who come from other cities and face problems in not only understanding the language but also are clueless about whom to approach, if something goes wrong,” says Sonakshi Bansal, a student of Daulat Ram College.

When it comes to sharing their problems with the police, most students feel that the girls would be much more comfortable with the women police officers.“I appreciate this move as everyone knows how unsafe Delhi can be for women. Such steps will definitely have a positive impact. Being a girl, I would be more comfortable in talking to a woman as she would understand me better. Any problems and you can easily go to them without thinking twice,” says Avneet Arora, a first year student of Hindu College.

Though the idea of helpdesks around the campus is much appreciated, the students feel these will be of help only if the helpdesks are ultimately functional.

“It is a good move as I am sure many women will feel comfortable confiding in women police officers but only if the helpdesks will be present and actually work,” says Chetna Virmani of Kirori Mal College.
