Edward was banned by his family from marrying the twice-divorced beauty, but gave up the throne to be with her in 1936.
Madonna is apparently so keen to play the role because she reportedly told her friends that she "sees similarities" between herself and Wallis as they are both feisty Americans who married Englishmen and caused a stir.

"Madonna said she is fascinated about this American commoner who refused to conform or offer explanations for her tangled love life," a source close to the singer told the newspaper.

The singer is said to have covered a wall of her London house with articles about her and even wrote to the the Queen, who is Edward's niece, for permission to make a movie.

Madonna's put her movie plans on the back burner during her recent divorce from British film director Guy Ritchie 40, but is said to be keen to pick up her silver screen ambitions again.
